Now what's the chances of this...

According to BS  Stats  Me, Tim and Steve Taylor are the longest serving crunchers and we ALL joined on 3rd April 1999!

Which also means that Tim was -5 years old when he joined! :D

I think someone has been mucking about with a BambleWeeny 57 sub-meson atomic vector plotter and drinking very hot tea.

Chris.

Hi Mike,

Yup - it's quite interesting - and very WRONG !!

I joined up with Classic SETI in July/August 1999, after coming back from the US, where it was all the rage - I remember "popping into" a computer fair in Melbourne, Florida, (while on my way to the Daytona Speedway to see the Pepsi 400) - and there was some "geek" who'd got Classic SETI running on a Pentium PC.

Everyone was standing around, watching the screensaver......and if you hadn't seen anything like this before, it was pretty "memerising", coz mostly PC's needed human "input" all the time - and here was this PC doing stuff all on it's own...!

So, when I got back, I signed up and been running it ever since.

And I KNOW it was either late July or early August.

Why the incorrect date?

1) One time Classic SETI crashed (in fact it happened a lot) and when it was restored, my "sign-up" date had been miraculously back-dated to 3rd April...!

I think it's quite likely that yours and Steves' were as well.

2) As a "fillip" to people crossing over from Classic SETI to BOINC, the same "member since" date has been transferred over from the old SETI to the new one - just to make us "oldsters" look a bit more "senior" than some of these new spring chickens joining up now...... :D

Lastly, my birthdate on this forum is the start date of the Team. But I go back a long time before that...

regards,

Tim

Edit: typo's

Well it did seem strange to me this morning when I saw it. I'm sure I joined 31st December 1999 (There was nothing much happening that day!)

There used to be a league table where you could compare your results with everyone else who had joined the same date. I tried the link earlier but it seems that the database was turned off a few months after the original SETI program finished as I could get it a few months ago when I last tried.

I know the old Classic SETI server has been officially retired and then shut down (and the indignity: switched OFF !!).

It'll probably find it's way into the Smithsonian someday (if it's not there already !!)

And all the "old" stuff has hopefully been backed up somewhere.

I certainly remember the old "Class of" database they ran.

BUT

If you go here:

http://www.boincsynergy.com/stats/index.php

and then scroll to the bottom right hand side, you can see a "BOINC equivalent": User by Signup Date  :D

Here's the direct link to the SETI stats (as above):

http://www.boincsynergy.com/stats/signu ... roject=sah

and lookie here at the SETI "Class of 3rd April 1999":

Here's the top:

http://www.boincsynergy.com/stats/class ... roject=sah

and here's the bottom of the list:

http://www.boincsynergy.com/stats/class ... roject=sah

22,673 members all signed up on that date - that's out of a TOTAL SETI membership (to date) of 507,000+  !!!

That's nearly 5% of all members signed up on ONE day, nearly 8 years ago...... Somehow I think not.........!

regards

Tim

Ah - I see.

For some reason I'm in twice April 3 1999, also in December 29th 1999, (no. 4026) - both positions wrong but it's not something I'm gonna complain about! :D
