SETI Enhanced
This thread was lost due to the DB Crash so here it is again.
As some users know SETI Enhanced is making its way to SETI, the WU's are longer as they process a lot more information in finer detail.
When this is released to the wild it is also hoped that the server strain will not be as bad seen as though there will not be as many request for work due to the length of these WU's.
So don't be alarmed one day if you wake up and see much bigger WU's in your cache, on my comp they typically last from 20hrs up to 30hrs, and that's with a lot of optimisation in the code already.
For users on a optimised client BOINC will just stop downloading new WU's when Enhanced comes out as it won't recognise them anymore, to get around this you will need to reset the project via BOINC, this will get rid of the optimised app and download Enhanced WU's.
A optimised Enhanced client is been worked on at the moment and it is hoped it is released at around the same time as Enhanced, this will need to be manually installed, much the same as we had to do for the normal app.
SETI@Home Plans
I reckon 2-3 months until it appears on SETI
PS: Looking forward to Astropulse

News Flash
andHi Everybody,
We've finally gottent to the point where we can attempt limited (few thousand per day) distribution of the Enhanced application in the main project! We will probably start in the next couple days.
The job's not entirely done. We still have to figure out the Windows 98 timer problem and watch to make sure there's not a systemic problem with reading JPEG files.
Thanks for all your help, and please stay tuned for AstroPulse.
Eric
Sorry for the confusion regarding the release of enhanced. The release of enhanced will happen slowly and in a random fashion so as not to use up too much of our bandwidth at once. It will probably take a month or more for this initial release to get out to all the machines out there.
The enhanced application uses different workunits and generates different results than the standard application. If you run the enhanced client on a workunit built for the standard application (or vice vera) you will get a result that will not validate, and therefore you probably won't get credit.
If you are running with the anonymous platform mechanism you will need to add a separate <app_info> element for the enhanced application.
Work will continue to be distributed fpr the normal SETI@home application, with the ratio of enhanced vs normal work slowly being increased over time until the normal application is phased out.

So unless you want to prat about editing XML files to accept SETI Enhanced, you will have to ditch the optimised apps you may be using for SETI.
Note: This doesn't apply to anyone using SETI without a optimised app, just those people using optimised app.
Going to remove mine now, saying that we have at least a month or so to go until normal SETI dies

Thanks for the info - was wondering if the opti-clients would be able to cope with the Enhanced WU's...now I know they (probably) won't...!
I've updated the section on the website about this.

Just finished my first enhanced workunit. 32 credits claimed for 3.5 hours work (I used to claim about that an hour)

Forgot to mention you also need to use BOINC 5.2.6 or above in order to claim the credits correctly.
I would skip that version altogether and download the latest development release
Ignore the big red text that says (MAY BE UNSTABLE - USE ONLY FOR TESTING) as it is very stable and works correctly.
Shut BOINC down completely, install the new version and let BOINC do the rest for you.
claimed credits will be correct then as enhanced doesn't rely on benchmarks anymore and older versions of BOINC don't support this new procedure correctly, so give invalid credits outs

I was using a version of Boinc 5.3.(something). It seems that we are only going to get about 30 credits per workunit http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit ... d=76495996UBT - Halifax--lad wrote:Forgot to mention you also need to use BOINC 5.2.6 or above in order to claim the credits correctly.

Well I did what David recommended this afternoon and a few minutes ago I got this msg in a pop-upUBT - Halifax--lad wrote:Correction easiest way to get rid of the optimised app would be to detach from SETI then re-attach
Runtime Error!
Program: ...athome.berkeley.edu\setiathome_5.12_windows_intelx86.exe

Please contact the application's support team for more information.
So I clicked ok.
I'm using Boinc Manager 5.2.13

Go here jackie http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php?dev=1
Ignore the scary message download it, stop BOINC and install this one,
PS: have asked over at SETI for you
Edit: doesnt need a manual benchmark does it on its own now must have been fixed since this morning

TYVM sweety, you are a star.
Two other things:
1: I got an error msg when 5.4.9 started
2: I've suspended everyhting but Seti which has another enhanced wu now crunching

Sounds like there may be a file missing as well in your BOINC folder, best thing to do is suspend all new work to the project, let BOINC crunch what you have got make sure the work is uploaded and out of your work queue, detach from SETI & then attach again, this will clear out all the files and re-download everything it needs to work correctly

Cor - you're lucky - I got 12.54 (or less !!):
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit ... d=76426452
So, you should try some SETI BETA WU's:
How's about 133.48 credits per WU?
http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/beta/wo ... uid=167817
Or even 220.07 credits per WU:
http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/beta/wo ... uid=165962

Tim
(Waiting for my SE cache to run out so I can install crunch3r's new opti-client for SE....!) :D

Hi David,UBT - Halifax--lad wrote:The guy on BETA with the Linux is a tester of the optimised enhanced apps hence his quicker times than the others
As the resident "fountain of knowledge" can you offer an opinion on this:
Running BOINC v5.2.13 and had crunch3r's SETI-opti app running.
Drained cache, since SE was being downloaded by others...!.
So now have NO SETI (4.1eight) WU's.
So, detached SETI, which caused a download of the SE application.
Did not download any work, as I suspended as soon as the app and support files downloaded.
Have now got crunch3r's latest opti-SE app.
Copied into correct project directory, but now get:
07/05/2006 19:01:29|SETI@home|app_version refers to nonexistent file: setiathome_4.11_windows_intelx86.exe
07/05/2006 19:01:29|SETI@home|Can't link app version in state file
So, somehow BONC still thinks I#'ve got the earlier SETI app installed..
very strange...
any thoughts...??

Tim

there shouldn't be any old files in there, when you detach from a project BOINC clears all the files for that project out, so when you attach back to a project it will download the latest filesTemujin wrote:I would guess you still have the old app_info.xml in your projects directoryUBT - Timbo wrote:So, somehow BONC still thinks I#'ve got the earlier SETI app installed..
Where I think the master has gone wrong is he needs to do this
Got to remember that SETI is still classed as 4.18 WU's, the enhanced ones are gradually been filtered in and until then you need to have both files in there for both optimisations and for both types of WU's, I reckon Timbo has gotten rid of a file needed when he was messing with Enhanced optimisation app
