It is often said that the Scots wrote the Book of Thrift although it has had many contributions from Yorkshiremen. However, it appears that the true language of the book is Dutch.

I was in Holland on business a few weeks ago and I was talking with my Dutch colleague about Christmas and he revealed to me the Dutch method of sending Christmas cards...

Put the card in an envelope and address it to yourself. Write the intended recipients name and address on the back. Then post the card WITHOUT A STAMP. When the card shows up at your house, refuse it and have it returned to sender.

Such brilliance. Today, I've just posted a card to my Dutch friend  :D

Er... doesn't this rely on:
1) you being at home to refuse it...?
2) If not, then a card is left, forcing you to go to the post office, where you'll recognise your own writing and then you can refuse to pay the postage cost + the extra surcharge and it would then be returned.

Seems like a lot of hassle to save the cost of a 2nd class stamp.

PS Here's a better thought. If EVERYONE sent post by second class, the Mail would be delivered faster, as they wouldn't have to sort out the 1st and 2nd class mail.....and most mail would be delivered next day.....!
