You can also use a proxy at home if you wish by setting up a network and installing the firewall and anti-virus software etc. on the proxy, which would free up resources on the secondary computer for extra BOINC-ing.A proxy server can either be a piece of hardware or a piece of software. They are generally used by larger networks or ISPS. A proxy server works when a user requests a web page from a remote web server, the page will pass through the networks proxy server and a copy of the page will be taken and stored locally on the proxy server. If another person on the same network requests the same page, instead of having to request the page from the remote web server it is taken from the local proxy server. If you are on a busy proxy server then your surfing experience can be a very slow one. The network can also use filtering software with the proxy server to filter the types of pages that are let on to the network.
