HI there ........ I have always used windoze since OS2 warp died many years ago . So any pointers will help ......
I have downloaded Ubuntu 7.10 desktop and made an iso disc .
I have a Pentium D 925 and all i want to know is how easy will it be to
get it going and will it make much difference running a 64 bit OS ?

I have tried the live disc with no problems ,So does this mean that if i do a full install it will work ?

Any suggestions ?

I have got Wubi which was recommended somewhere else in the forum and i tried to install BOINC to see if i could squeeze a bit more performance out of the machine. But every time i tried to install it, there would be an error and i have no idea how Linux works so i was rather stumped and gave up, although i still have it installed.  :?

When I was Boincin' on Linux *ahem*, I cheated and used the Knoppix live DVD :P

It worked well too :)
Untill TSP made the Windows x64 app run at warp speed.
Grr they done that on purpose, one time I actualy figure out how to get something installed on linux (and working), the windows app turns out to be faster

Only me could Jinx Linux

lol might stick with linux then

Also, interesting idea i had (bit odd however). If you run a virtual machine in windows, and put boinc on the virtual machine as well as the main host machine.. could you do more work? Or would it be no different to just the main host machine running it with more processing power without running the virtual machine.

Badly worded, but it's late so i'll leave you guessing!

Less work, as the Host os and the guest os would be fighting for cpu time.
However if you want to run a project that is linux only and your a windows user (and don't want to do a full install of linux), or if it's new and your not too sure about how safe it is, you can run it fine in a virtual PC.
Just as long as the host OS is not, or is just running non-cpu intensive stuff

It will run a bit slower, so usualy best to use an older os as the guest os.(windows wise Win2k is great!, linux wise got no idea, but with the multitude of linux versions out there, I'm sure there is a nice light version that just has the basics, and it will get boinc running, and yes you can run a live cd/dvd in a virtual pc :P), and if you bios has the Virtulization option, switch it on.
Posh word for make it a ikkle bit more secure and run faster :P
