MilkyWay Crunchathon 2009

Welcome to the first Crunchathon of 2009!
We're all going to have a play with...
MilkyWay!
For those that haven't done MilkyWay before the attaching URL is
http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/
We're all ready the top UK team but after the crunch we will be a Top 10 World Team. We need to have a RAC to match as we're at 14 in RAC performance.
There was a tie for the backup project, so in the event of MilkyWay going down you can choose between AQUA (
http://aqua.dwavesys.com/) or PrimeGrid (
http://www.primegrid.com/ ).
So the targets for this Crunch are...
1 - Get into the Top 10 total
2 - Get into the top 10 in RAC
and the BIGGY...
3 - 600,000 credits over 7 days!
"600,000 credits? That's not likely" you say! It may not be but it's a damn good target - no one said a target should be easy!
So there you go! You've got 168 hours to blast them there stats!
Starting stats...
Day 0
- UK position 1st
World Total Position 11th
World RAC = 14th
Current Credit Total = 14,342,049
Target Credit Total = 14,942,049
Gained so far = 0
To get = 600,000

and the BIGGY...
3 - 500,000 credits over 7 days!
"½ million credits? That's not likely" you say! It may not be but it's a damn good target - no one said a target should be easy!

We only need 71k a day ......not too much of a BIGGY ......
Just 2 more quads and we will pass it easy

Actually you're right! We did 436,000 last week!
Hmm, I suppose I could make it a real challenge and set it to 600,000 - yeah I think I will...

Day 1
13 hours in and things have ramped up nicely. We've gone from just under 3,000/hour to around 5,500/hour! Looks like 600,000 might be too easy! I'll leave it at 600,000 for now, but if we hit it would anyone have any objections to setting it higher just to get through the 7 days? It may have to go as high as 850,000!
Day 1
13 hours in...
- UK position 1st
World Total Position 11th
World RAC = 14th
Start Total = 14,342,049
Target Credit Total = 14,942,049
Gained so far = 63,681
To get = 536,319

Why not make it a real challenge, and make it a million?

UBT - Rick Horn wrote:Why not make it a real challenge, and make it a million?
Yeah!!
At the very least we could set our minimum objective as 15 million total credits.

UBT - Rick Horn wrote:Why not make it a real challenge, and make it a million?
A million? That would really squeeze the pips! Hmmm, well based on
just the 10:00 update...
((5,375*157)+63,681) the projected total would be 907,566. To get 1 million the hourly rate would have to increase to an average of 6,410. This is about an extra immediate 25 cores, more cores would be required if we drifted off this target. We currently have, very approximately, about 160 running.
As we've only just started so I'll leave it for now, see where we are on Monday/Tuesday.
15 million should be easily attainable anyway based on recent output.

Surpassing targets now!! You're just showing off!
9th World RAC now reached!
Day 3
- UK position 1st
World Total Position 10th UP 1
World RAC = 9th UP 5
Start Total = 14,342,049
Target Credit Total = 14,942,049
Total so far = 14,760,218
Gained so far = 418,169
To get = 221,187
NEW
Secondary target = 15,000,000 credits.
Tertiary Target = 1,000,000 credits over 7 days.
I wasn't going to put a third target of 1 million in, but ((418,169/3)*7)= 975727 - which is just 24,273 short of the million. It's actually a little less than that as the first day was a bit lower than subsequent days.
So, as long as everyone carries on as they are and we can get a couple more members in we
might be able to do it!

83 Hours in...
A little early today.
Just 30,000 short of primary target! The way things are going I should be able to report both primary and secondary targets reached tomorrow!
I've been watching
John's Statsfor this project and it's heartening to see gradual increase in members joining in, and consequently, watch the daily totals surpass the previous days. The way things are going we should be able to hit the million before Friday evening.
Day 4
- UK position 1st
World Total Position 10th UP 1
World RAC = 9th UP 5
Start Total = 14,342,049
Target Credit Total = 14,942,049
Total so far = 14,912,521
Gained so far = 570,472
To get = 29,528
NEW
Secondary target = 15,000,000 credits.
Tertiary Target = 1,000,000 credits over 7 days.

113 Hours in...
Wow! Quite a bit has happened since yesterday!
1 - We hit the primary target.
2 - We blasted through the secondary target of 15,000,000.
3 - We jumped another 2 World RAC places to #7
That's enough to be going on with, so onto the last target of 1,000,000 credits in 7 days!
Day 5
- UK position 1st
World Total Position 10th UP 1
World RAC = 7th UP 7
Start Total = 14,342,049
Target Credit Total = 14,942,049
Total so far = 15,086,897
Gained so far = 744,848
To get = 0 - now 144,848 over target!
Secondary target = 15,000,000 credits.
Final Target = 1,000,000 credits over 7 days - 255,152 needed
Watch
John's Stats (the 1wk total column) to see how close we are getting.

An early update today because...
well it just is!
We've gone up another World RAC place!!
Day 6
- UK position 1st
World Total Position 10th UP 1
World RAC = 6th UP 8
Start Total = 14,342,049
Target Credit Total = 14,942,049
Total so far = 15,288,550
Gained so far = 946,501
To get = 0 - now 346,501 over target!
Secondary target = 15,000,000 credits.
Final Target = 1,000,000 credits over 7 days - 53,499 needed
John's Stats (the 1wk total column) actually show we've achieved the target but this is from Thursday to Thursday - bit of a technicality there!

Some of us may have started midnight Friday, but the actual start was 8PM Friday when the result of which project to do was officially known, (Anyone know where my 'Jobsworth' hat has gone?!

) but as there's only 22,000 to go it doesn't really matter.
