Guide to BMC/IPMI ("Explaining the Baseboard Management Controller or BMC in Servers"):
https://www.servethehome.com/explaining ... n-servers/
BMC/IPMI offers onboard chip based remote management including BIOS + OS level (java/HTML5) KVM, as well as centralized management of temps, power, fans, etc.
This is how servers are managed remotely; unfortunately previously IPMI was never built into consumer mobos/cpus.
However with the power of Ryzen CPUs now outperforming Xeons, some manufacturers are now slowly releasing mobos.
After months of research, I thought I would share the only 3 available Ryzen mobos with IPMI:
AM4 Mobo:
ASROCK Rack X470D4U
https://www.asrockrack.com/general/prod ... ifications
[comments: I have not done any investigation into this (eg CPU coolers etc) as I only really need TR4 mobos]
* Supports AMD AM4 Socket Ryzen™ PRO/ Ryzen™ 2nd and 3rd generation series processors
* Supports 4x DDR4 ECC and non-ECC UDIMM, max. 32 GB
* Supports up to 6 x SATA3 6.0Gb/s
* Integrated IPMI 2.0 with KVM and Dedicated LAN (RTL8211E)
* Supports 2x GLAN by Intel I210AT
TR4 Mobos:
ASROCK Rack X399D8A-2T
https://www.asrockrack.com/general/prod ... ifications
[comments: A great looking mobo let down by the fact that the RAM/CPU socket are facing the wrong direction for high TDP TR2 CPU coolers!]
* Supports AMD TR4 Socket Ryzen Threadripper Series CPUs
* Support quad channel DDR4 total 8 DIMM slots
* Support 8x SATA 6Gb/s by AMD X399 and 2x SATA 6Gb/s by Asmedia 1061
* Support 2x M.2 (PCIe3.0 x4) up to 22110 form factor
* Support 3x PCIe 3.0 x16、2x PCIe 3.0 x8
* Support Dual 10GbE by Intel X550-AT2
Tyan Tomcat EX S8020

[comments: A great looking mobo let down by the fact that it doesnt seem to be available practically anywhere just yet!]
* 12" x 9.6" ATX form factor
* X399 chipset w/ 8 DIMM slots
* 2 1000Base-T LAN w/ shared IPMI port
* 4 PCIe Gen.3 x16 slots (1 in x8 link)

Re: AM4/TR4 Mobos with IPMI/BMC
And if anyone wants to build one of these into a 4U server, then the only CPU cooler that will fit for TR4 is the Noctua NH-U9-TR4-SP3
https://noctua.at/en/nh-u9-tr4-sp3
I am not sure about AM4 coolers.

** EPYC mobo with Gigabyte IPMI, usage GPU slots.. CPU cooler wrong direction so would require maybe supermicro cooler. **

Thanks for sharing Chris. I personally haven't moved into the server world (yet?). I am still in the HEDT space, but am also primarily focused on AMD products at the moment.
BRING ON THE THREADRIPPER 3s!!

Yeah Threadripper (TR) ROME's are going to be pretty good I think, probably 32/64 cores at the top end.
EPYC are normally far more efficient however in terms of power usage though when you compare against TR.
To be honest unless your running 8+ machines I wouldnt bother with Servers (eg server based Workstations).

Makes sense. I am about to build a third system. I have a couple of gaming laptops that I use for sprints as well, but aim to pack in as much compute as I can into the three water cooled PCs. Don’t think I will go near 8 systems any time soon!
